[NEW]: “Waterfalls” by Mr. Little Jeans

This afternoon, Mr. Little Jeans released her cover of Paul McCartney’s “Waterfalls,” continuing the oceans theme begun with last month’s “Oh Sailor.”

Adding to Mr. Little Jeans’sĀ list of ethereal, dreampop reduxes of songs, she continues to stand out amongst all the other dream poppers.

“Midnight City” Acoustic Audience Sing-Along with The Knocks

Last night, The Knocks had some technical difficulties in the middle of their set last night during PopScene at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. While the audience waited, Mr. JPatt (half of the Knocks) played an acoustic version of their cover of M83’s “Midnight City.” He said that since Mandy Lee (the singer in their cover) wasn’t with them, the audience would have to sing.

No one knew the words, but everyone knew the boops.

A couple people behind my friend and me were convinced the first line was “waiting in a car.”

Chromatics Cover Joy Division / New Order’s “Ceremony”

Chromatics are probably best known for their sultry electropop cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.”

Now they’ve taken their electro-sensuality to remake Joy Division‘s last / New Order‘s first single “Ceremony.”

P.S. Both Chromatics tracks are definitely songs to bone to.

“I Would Die 4 V” by Prince (Covered by CHVRCHES)

I have to start this off by stating that I have some reservations about songs that are about self-sacrifice for love, specifically ones about dying for someone. I get a little cynical but most of all, I get a little paranoid/scared about a theoretical someone who states they would die for me, kill themselves over me, etc.

(I am pretty sure these feelings are caused by Bruno Mars’s song “Grenade” because it seems so bitter – claiming that the object of his affections – of his self-sacrifices – is the most terrible person ever and here’s Bruno Mars martyring himself, saying he’s the best boyfriend in the world because he would have put his life on the line for that woman that he now hates, so that’s why she shouldn’t have done all those terrible things she supposedly did. Just chill out, man. Also – I’m pretty sure that Bruno Mars was just trying to be like Prince, but… As usual, I digress.)

Anyway, Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” is an exception to this rule. Because, well, IT’S FUCKING PRINCE.

And this, by the transitive property of equality also means that the CHVRCHES cover (stylized in CHVRCHES style as “I Would Die 4 V”) is also an exception to the rule. Lauren Mayberry‘s higher-pitched vocals combined with her Scottish accent bring a younger, more innocent take on this classic 80s love song.

Also – Not gonna lie, another reason this song (and this cover in particular) is an exception to this rule is that I have a huge celeb crush on the singer, Lauren Mayberry. šŸ˜€

UPDATE – June 2013 – A new video was placed into this blog post because the original YouTube video with a recorded version of the cover was taken down.

“Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode – Covered by Sonos

If you’ve read this blog long enough, you’ll know that I love covers, especially coversĀ that are done in a style almost completely different from the original.

That’s why I was instantly drawn to the Sonos cover of “Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode that my friend Kirsten posted on Facebook. I know it’sĀ usually dorky, but Sonos makes a capella covers of songs that are really spectacular. And to be completely honest, as a Cal alum, I have a special place in my heart for Cal a capella groups.

“The Suburbs (Arcade Fire cover)” by Mr. Little Jeans

You already all know about my unconditional love for Mr. Little Jeans.

And what better song to add as another reason for that love than an Arcade Fire cover?

On another note, this video (unofficial and fan-made, I’m assuming) is pretty awesome because Alessandra Ambrosia’s sensual nature is a perfect embodiment of Mr. Little Jeans’s music. (Although I do think this video could have done with a lot less monster truck action.)

Check out more of Mr. Little Jeans’s music.
